Discover The Secrets Of Computer Icons
Computer icons are a modern software tool; they were introduced into the computing world in the late twentieth century. Icons are small pictures which appear on a computer screen and assist the user with programs and functions - they represent the various files, folders, applications and devices on a computer’s operating system. There are many different novelty computer icons and they are incredibly appealing - computer users would much rather be welcomed by a brightly coloured (and sometimes animated) icon that a boring blank screen with basic prompts.
Apple claimed to have invented the icon in the early eighties but this is untrue. Rather, a group of programmers at Xerox developed the world’s first commercial interface using icons in the 1970’s. The concept behind the computer icon is a rather simple one: the icon (or symbol) represents a particular feature of a program and what that program does. For example, the folder icon on a desktop represents a place to store files and a notepad icon represents the folder where notes are kept. Other common examples are an icon depicting a picture of the world for Google Earth, and a picture of a bin with a recycling symbol on the front to access … yes, you guessed it … the recycle bin! These icons may be found on the desktop and in the main toolbar of your computer.
Although Xerox invented the concept of the icon, Microsoft quickly took up the idea and incorporated the computer icon as an integral part of their Windows program. Perhaps the biggest advantage of introducing icons to Windows has been the user-friendly element: people feel much more at ease clicking on an icon to access the program they want, rather than having to type in confusing commands or follow tedious prompts. This is especially true for novice users.
Since the inception of the computer icon, the world has gone icon crazy. This is true of the usual icon which represents the many functions and programs on a computer, but the phenomenon of social networking has made a new type of icon extremely popular. These include ’smileys’ and the ‘emoticons’ that people often use on blogs and social networking sites to demonstrate their mood. There are thousands of sites on the internet offering visitors the chance to download the many different types of computer icon for free. Some sites even have downloadable programs which allow users to design their own icons.
A computer icon is made up of tiny pixels, and they range in size from 16 x 16 pixels to 128 x 128 pixels. Some advanced machines can feature icons up to 512 x 512 pixels in size, but icon size depends on graphical output device - when this is small, the icon is small. People with poor eyesight may need to adjust the pixel settings of a computer icon to suit their visual needs.
There is no doubt that the computer icon has grown massively along with technology, and today an icon can represent anything as specified by a user.
