How To Fade The Golf Ball

The fade is a great shot to play, especially off the tee. It is easier to control than the draw and is the “go to” shot of many professionals when they need to put the ball in play. It does not travel as far as a draw, but hitting that second shot out of the fairway is more important than distance. If you don’t believe me, Jack Nicklaus routinely played a fade.

The fade is the opposite of a draw. It will produce more backspin on the ball and create a left to right ball flight for a right-handed player. The ball flight will be the opposite for a left-handed player, right to left.

The majority of golfers are right-handed. Also, most golf courses favor an errant shot which travels to the right, since a slice is a very common fault among average players. If most courses contained water hazards and thick trees to the right of the fairway, many golfers would toss their clubs in the lake and quit forever.

The following tips will help a right-handed player produce a fade.

Take your normal stance, but line up to the left of your target. Line up the face of your club in the direction of the target. This will open the face of the club. Take your normal swing. An open club face imitates an outside to inside swing path, which creates a ball which will start to the left and move back to the right.

This technique is very simple, since it only requires a golfer to adjust their setup, not their swing. Most people have had the same style of swing for years so changing it can be very difficult.

Be sure to practice this technique out at the range a few times before using it on the course. The amount of curve put on the ball will vary, depending on how much you open your club face. Many golfers already have an outside to inside swing path so that could influence the ball also.

One other thing you need to remember. Golf is a game so…..HAVE FUN!
